Profile

The radiology department offers the full spectrum of radiodiagnostic examinations using cutting-edge technology. The department is in position to serve any referred case by employing an adequate number of radiology specialists, technologists, nursing and administrative staff.

The radiology department of Nicosia G.H.  is the only department in Cyprus that offers a comprehensive radiology specialisation training programme to junior doctors. The training programme is regularly updated, reevaluated and accredited by universities in Cyprus and Greece.

In the scope of classic radiology, the department can offer any regular x-rays such as scoliosis imaging, panoramic x-rays and bone density measurements (for osteoporosis assessment).

The ultrasound section can accommodate any referral for ultrasound examination including scans of soft tissues, musculoskeletal system, paediatric, abdominal, urological, prostate, external and internal genitalia, thyroid and parathyroid glands, breast, etc. Doppler examinations of the abdomen, soft tissues, neck, and limps can also be conducted. Finally, there is the ability to perform biopsies in any accessible area (soft tissues, thyroid, abdomen, breasts).

The Mammography section conducts both conventional mammograms and breast tomosynthesis examinations, with breast biopsy capabilities. The latter are carried out in collaboration with the Breast Clinic of the Nicosia G.H. by specialised personnel with a long experience in the field and members of one of the best organised teams in the region. The patients are closely monitored by the Breast Clinic and are referred for to receive any treatment deemed appropriate for each case.

The CT section performs the full spectrum of CT imaging diagnostics including CT angiography, for any part of the body. Biopsies, drainage procedures, and percutaneous thermal ablation of lesions (MWA) can also be performed on the CT scanner in coordination with the Interventional Radiology department. Non-hospitalized patients are kept for short-term monitoring in the care unit of the Radiology Department, under the supervision of personnel with extensive experience in interventional cases. Physicians from any specialty are readily available to deal with any complications that may arise on a 24-hour basis.

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) section, was recently equipped with a brand-new state-of-the-art machine, with a larger bore (70 cm), offering a more comfortable experience to the patients capable of performing any examination on patients of any age, from neonates to the elderly. Sedation can be administered, when required, after prior informing and consulting with the anaesthesiologists of Nicosia G.H. or Makarios Hospital, especially in cases of young children. The staff has gained extensive experience through their long record of managing the most complex cases of the island, admitted to the only tertiary and paediatric hospital in Cyprus.

Interventional Radiology

The highly trained personnel of the Interventional Radiology section conduct numerous interventional procedures (over 1500 per year). The section has the capacity to hospitalise patients in the nursing unit of the Radiology Department. All interventions are conducted in coordination with the department’s administrative staff, following a thorough examination of each case and receiving guidance from the interventional radiologist who will carry out the procedure. The interventional procedures include cases of vascular embolization, organ chemoinfusion, neurointerventional cases (treating cerebrovascular conditions, embolization of aneurysms and vascular malformations), body interventions (STENT placement, biliary drainage, nephrostomies), as well as cases of chronic pain (injections in facet joints, etc.).

All patients are closely monitored by the interventional radiology team, and if deemed necessary, they can be evaluated by other specialty physicians related to the patient’s condition. Appointments in the Radiology Department can be made by phone, where case-specific instructions will be given. Certain examinations, such as regular X-rays, urgent ultrasound cases, or panoramic radiographs, do not require an appointment and can be performed on the same day. Examination results are filed in the patient’s personal health record within a week, and the patient receives the imaging examination CD as soon as it is available. The written report can be collected by the patient after he/she has notified by phone the reception of the Radiology Department.
