The Anaesthesiology Department of Nicosia General Hospital is staffed by a team of specialised, highly trained and with extensive experience anaesthesiologists, as well as a number of resident anaesthesiologists.
The department’s purpose is to provide the safest and highest quality anaesthesiology services for both surgical and non-surgical procedures, as well as to support vital functions, especially airway management for hospitalised patients or emergency cases that require it.
It is divided into two subgroups:
The first is staffed by anaesthesiologists responsible for dealing with cases from various specialties such as general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, maxillofacial surgery, and kidney transplants.
The second subgroup consists of specialised anaesthesiologists that are exclusively handling cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.
Anaesthesiologists also administer anaesthesia outside the operating room for other specialties, attend emergency cases in the A&E or in other clinics of the hospital, and provide services for patient transfers to and from the hospital.
Noteworthy is the fact that during the pandemic, a period of heavy strain for the public healthcare system due to the unprecedented numbers of severely ill COVID19 patients, the contribution of anaesthesiologists in intensive care units has been significant.
At Nicosia General Hospital, which is the largest tertiary hospital in the Cyprus healthcare system, operations from all surgical specialties are performed with the exception of paediatric surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, and ophthalmology cases, which are conducted at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital. However, in cases where the severity of the condition dictates it, these procedures can also be performed at Nicosia General Hospital.
At Nicosia General Hospital, complex and specialised procedures are performed even on patients with severe underlying health conditions. The anaesthesiologists at Nicosia General Hospital have the ability and experience to handle any case, regardless of its severity. Of course, the ability of the anaesthesiologists to treat cases from any medical specialisation is only possible by gaining a comprehensive scientific knowledge and continuous study of the two core disciplines that form the basis of anaesthesiology, namely physiology and pharmacology. To realise the above, a training program for anaesthesiologists has been established at the department and offers lectures and case studies.
Specifically, the responsibilities of the anaesthesiologists include:
