General Surgery Department of Limassol General Hospital

In General

The General surgery department of Limassol General Hospital is situated on the third floor of the hospital. It has 38 hospital beds. Five of them are accessible to the ENT department and 3 to the ophthalmology department according to their needs. The pediatric surgical cases are being treated and hospitalized at the pediatric clinic of the hospital and the seriously ill patients at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

The surgical department is on call/duty every day for the district of Limassol. Due to the particularity of the hospital as the only public hospital of reference in the district of Limassol, the clinic’s doctors are dealing with complex surgical cases on a daily basis. Due to the non-existence of a Neurosurgical, Vascular surgery, Cardiothoracic surgery, Oral maxillofacial surgery and Plastic surgery departments in the hospital the General surgery’s department doctors are dealing with cases of the surgical specialties mentioned before.

Moreover, 2 foundation year 1 doctors are currently working at the surgical department as well by agreement with GMC, according to the General Medical Council’s rules and regulations.

GENERAL SURGERY DEPARTMENT’S ACTIVITIES

The General Surgery’s department activities are listed below:

The department’s daily program includes: systematic and detailed approach of current cases with simultaneous thorough discussion of problems that arise – whether they are diagnostic or therapeutic. Evermore, daily morning rounds are being done by the surgical department staff.

Outpatient clinic of General Surgery

  • Every day of the week except Wednesdays (8 a.m. – 3 p.m.)

At the outpatient clinic patients with surgical diseases that are being referred by Personal doctors/GPs/ or other specialties are being evaluated and treated. According to each case, patients are being scheduled for surgery. The patient is informed about the therapy that he/she will get. In addition, previously operated patients are being followed up after their surgery.

Breast and thyroid clinic

  • Every day of the week (8 a.m. – 3 p.m.)

Clinical examination and evaluation of the patients is being done. Moreover, diagnostic surgical tests/actions are being carried out with ultrasound guidance such as breast and thyroid aspiration with a fine needle (FNA – Fine Needle Aspiration), and cutting needle biopsies (Tru-cut Biopsies).

It is a center of reference for breast diseases and surgical diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. At the surgical department the whole range of contemporary diagnostic and therapeutic actions is being carried out for example Sentinel Node Biopsy, which presupposes the existence of an organized Nuclear Medicine department. The patients are treated in a multidisciplinary approach through the cooperation of the clinic with the Radiology, Oncology, and the Nuclear Medicine department of the hospital and with the Pathology Anatomy department of Nicosia’s General Hospital.

Morbid obesity clinic

  • Every Wednesday (8 a.m. – 3 p.m.)

Examination and evaluation of patients in order to choose who can have the surgery for morbid obesity is being done as well as preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow up. There is a close cooperation with the Dietology and Nutrition department of the hospital.

Surgical oncology clinic

  • Every Wednesday (8 a.m. – 3 p.m.)

Working in close cooperation with the Oncologists and other specialties of the hospital that may be needed, Surgical Oncology patients are being followed up and decisions are being made for their following therapy and course.

Endoscopy

Endoscopies are being carried out mainly for the diagnostic part and the post-operative follow up of the patients.

Operating room for minor surgical cases

  • As a part of the outpatient clinic.

Minor surgical actions that can be done with topical anesthesia are being done such as removal of moles, cysts, onychectomies etc.

SURGERIES

The operating rooms that are available to the General Surgery department are 5 per week. Emergency cases are being treated at the emergency operation room of the operating rooms’ floor.

A whole lot of patients are being treated yearly for general surgical problems – acute and chronic in nature – but also, severe injuries of intra-abdominal organs following trauma are being operated as well. The surgeries that are currently being done are for the following findings: Benign and malignant diseases of the breast, thyroid, intra-abdominal organs, extra peritoneal organs such as the biliary system, pancreas, stomach, large bowel and small bowel. In addition, soft tissue diseases and abdominal wall problems such as hernias of the rectum-perineum are being operated too. Moreover, central venous catheters/peritoneal catheters for dialysis are being placed. The surgeries are being done in an open approach or by laparoscopy.

EDUCATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC WORK

Among the clinic’s activities is the education of resident doctors and practicing physicians. The educational program except the daily teaching rounds and the teaching surgeries includes educational courses in the clinic, bibliography updating, presentation and discussion of cases.

In addition, the surgical clinic every year is welcoming a large number of medical students   from the University of Nicosia which is contracted with the hospital. The students have the opportunity to observe the outpatient’s clinic daily activities, the surgeries and the clinic’s doctors teach them on a daily basis. Every Wednesday educational classes are being held at the lecture room of the hospital in cooperation with other departments, visiting doctors and pharmaceutical visitors that are updating the participants about new drugs or new supply materials of the hospital.

The doctors and the nursing staff work in groups that are focused in specific topics with goal to promote in-depth studying, always according to specific protocols-for example protocols for surgical infections, surgical oncology of breast/large bowel/thyroid, management of Head/brain and skull trauma, anticoagulant therapy/transfusions, post-operative analgesia etc.

Doctors of the clinic are instructors of the PHTLS, ATLS and DSTC programs. Evermore, the doctors and the nursing staff of the department observe seminars, conferences and tutoring sessions about General Surgery on a regular basis.

The department’s doctors take part in scientific activities of the hospital, of the Hellenic Surgical association, the Cyprus surgical association, and the Limassol’s Medical council. In addition, they are part of organizing committees of seminars and conferences.
