The department of Dietetics and Nutrition is staffed by a Clinical Paediatric Dietitian, Ms. Georgia Chappa, BSc (Hons), PGDipDiet, RD.

Services provided:

1. Patient follow-up and preparation of personalised diets or enteral/parenteral nutrition for inpatients and outpatients, after referral by the attending doctor:

Inpatients of the Arch. Makarios III Hospital wards: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Paediatric 1 + 2, Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Oncology, Paediatric and Adolescent Inpatient Department, Gynaecology (adults), Obstetrics 1 + 2 (adults), Ophthalmology (adults).

Outpatients of all specialties and subspecialties covered by Arch. Makarios III Hospital:

Paediatric Neurology Paediatric Endocrinology Genetic Diseases Paediatric Psychiatry Eating disorders in children and adolescents – anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa etc., that are monitored at the Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Eating Disorders

Paediatric Oncology Paediatric Cardiology Paediatric Pulmonology Paediatric Nephrology Paediatric Gastroenterology Preterm Infants Adult Endocrinology Gynaecology – Obstetrics

2 . Insulin pump placement service for children and adolescents – training in the use and adjustment of the pump, in-depth education on carbohydrate exchanges, insulin-to-carb ratios and systematic monitoring of patients both in person and by telephone, before and after the placement of the insulin pump.

3. Paediatric Liver, Gastroenterology and Nutrition centre – Arch. Makarios III Hospital – King’s College Hospital London – participation in the Paediatric Gastroenterology Clinic and continuous monitoring of the Centre’s cases, during the 3 week-long annual visits of the Paediatric Gastroenterologist Dr. Babu Vadamalayan and the 1 week-long annual visit of the Paediatric Hepatologist Dr Alasdair Baker.

4. Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Eating Disorders – The Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Eating Disorders was established in 2012 and treats all eating disorders and other psychiatric cases. These cases are systematically monitored by our team, which includes a child psychiatrist, a child psychologist, a nurse, a clinical dietitian, an occupational therapist and a paediatrician.

The Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Eating Disorders was established following two years of intensive training of the team (including the clinical dietitian) by King’s College London (Institute of Psychiatry at the Maudsley) in the treatment of eating disorders in Children and Adolescents (Family Therapy – Maudsley Method).

5. Nutritional Products- applications to the Committee of Nutritional Products for the administration of nutritional (enteric) products to outpatients when deemed necessary.

6. Organisation and management of dietetics services.

7. Collaboration with fellow clinical dietitians at SHSO hospitals for preparing menus and recipes and co-authoring nutrition manuals, protocols, diets and brochures applicable to various diseases.

8. Designing and supervising the menu, supporting the smooth operation of both the wards and the kitchen and management of food supplies with the Hospital’s supplies manager.

9. Training of staff groups on nutritional topics, both general and specialised. 10. Attendance/Internship of Dietetics Students during their educational programme.
