Profile

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Arch. Makarios III hospital is unique in its kind across Cyprus, both in the public and private sectors. The Unit treats critically ill children aged from 15 days to 15 years, with some exceptions (e.g., adolescents with an underlying chronic illness and low body weight who are managed by dedicated paediatric subspecialties at Arch. Makarios III).

Staffed by specialised paediatric intensivists and specially trained nursing personnel, the unit has a capacity of 12 beds, 2 of which are designated negative pressure isolation units. It is fully equipped with cutting-edge technology (including equipment for monitoring, conventional and high-frequency mechanical ventilation, extrarenal dialysis, administration of NO, etc.), adhering to the latest international standards. The unit works closely with physicians from all paediatric specialities to ensure the optimal management of each case.

Furthermore, the unit is responsible for the supervision and organisation of the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) community nursing programme. This programme provides home care for children with tracheostomies who require ongoing mechanical ventilation support.

The unit also provides training for paediatric resident physicians, medical students from the University of Cyprus and the European University, as well as nursing students from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and other private universities in Cyprus.
