Profile

The Famagusta Accident and Emergency Department operates 24/7 for the treatment of emergencies. It operates throughout winter and summer, a period in which the workload increases due to the increased number of tourists in the area. Both medical and nursing staff are experienced and well trained via daily, monthly and annual training schedules, to facilitate the rapid assessment and management of the cases admitted to the Department.

The A&E Department implements a triage system, where emergencies are prioritised for treatment. In this spirit, each patient is initially assessed by a trained nurse. Following the compilation of a brief medical history the patient is then classified according to the severity of the symptoms in a 5-point priority order (ESI-emergency severity index) and is examined accordingly by the on-duty doctor.

The Department is covered by all specialties that are ready to respond immediately and attend to various cases. Following the completion of all required examinations and treatments, the patient is either discharged or admitted to the corresponding specialised clinic for his/her condition. Patients with acute myocardial infarction are transferred to an angiography laboratory within 90 minutes from diagnosis, according to the relevant protocol. Furthermore, the Department is supported by the Clinical Laboratory and the Radiology Department which provide high quality and reliable supporting services. The A&E Department operates in cooperation with the Ambulance Control Centre for the immediate transfer of patients to and from the hospital, when deemed necessary.
