Profile

The Accident and Emergency Department, also known as ‘First Aid Department’, is a core part of our hospital and is staffed with highly trained medical, paramedical and nursing staff. It operates on a 24-hour basis, 365 days a year and it is the A&E department of Nicosia with the most comprehensive state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for providing the best possible, immediate and appropriate response to emergencies.

Provided Services

  • Management of multi-injuries of any aetiology (traffic accidents, occupational accidents, etc.)
  • Management of cardiac arrest.
  • Management of acute cardiac failure.
  • Management of acute respiratory failure.
  • Treatment of burns.
  • Management of pathological conditions.
  • Management of neurological incidents.

Management of all acute surgical cases (orthopaedic, neurosurgical, vascular, maxillofacial, otorhinolaryngological, urological, etc.).

The A&E Department implements a triage system, where emergencies are prioritised for treatment. To this effect, each patient is initially assessed by a trained nurse. Following the compilation of a brief medical history, the patient is classified according to the severity of the symptoms in a 5-point priority order (ESI-emergency severity index) and is examined accordingly by the on-duty doctor.

The Department is covered by all specialties that are ready to respond immediately and attend to various cases. Following the completion of all required examinations and urgent treatments, the patient is either discharged or admitted to the corresponding specialised clinic for his/her condition. Furthermore, the Department is supported by the Clinical Laboratory and the Radiology Department which provide high quality and reliable supporting services. The A&E Department operates in cooperation with the Ambulance Control Centre for the immediate transfer of patients to and from the hospital, when deemed necessary.

The Department deals with more than 70,000 cases each year.
