Profile

The Accident and Emergency Department of Larnaca General Hospital is the only secondary Emergency Department in the Larnaca district, serving a permanent population of 170,000 people along with a large transient population due to the increased connectivity of the city through the multiple highways and Larnaca airport.

MISSION

The treatment of all emergencies with the aim of saving lives at risk and preventing serious harm due to accidents and acute incidents on patients’ health, to the best extent possible.

VISION

To transform the department into a model diagnostic and therapeutic centre for emergency medicine, comparable only to the best international centres of reference.

OBJECTIVE

To provide accredited high-quality care services to all patients through the rigorous implementation of evidence-based clinical practice.

AVAILABLE SERVICES

-Triage

All cases arriving at the department undergo triage by a trained and experienced nurse according to the ESI system to determine their severity and prioritise each case accordingly

-Fast Track Clinic (in collaboration with the ΗΙΟ)

Low-priority patients are referred for treatment to their personal physician, or to an on-call ΗΙΟ physician (when available) at a nearby to the A&E location.

-Resuscitation Unit

Patients in or at risk of cardiac arrest are treated in a specialised unit capable of providing mechanical compressions, mechanical respiratory support, and vital function monitoring through telemetry. The resuscitation team includes staff from the Emergency Department as well as on-call cardiologists, anaesthesiologists, and ICU physicians.

-Trauma Unit

Polytrauma patients undergo triage in a dedicated room where their injuries are assessed according to the ATLS protocol. Data for legal and forensics purposes are collected, and minor injuries that do not require major surgical interventions are treated on the spot (such as wound suturing/welding, reduction/setting of dislocations and application of splints/casts).

-High Dependency Unit (HDU)

High-priority patients with compromised vital functions are admitted for management in the HDU, where telemetry and interventions of cardiac and pathological emergencies such as coronary syndromes, arrhythmias, pulmonary oedema, asthma attack, exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sepsis, pulmonary embolism, acute renal impairment with electrolyte disturbances can be performed based on established clinical protocols.

-Short Stay Unit

The unit accommodates cases for short-term treatment and/or monitoring (such as medication administration, vital sign monitoring, hydration) in a chair or bed.

-Suspected Cases Unit

This unit manages febrile or patients with breathing difficulties who undergo urgent molecular testing and are subsequently classified as positive or negative cases, based on the results.

-COVID-19 Short Stay Nursing Unit

The unit operates within the A&E department for accommodating up to 10 COVID-19 patients who are evaluated for possible admission and treatment based on the current COVID-19 protocol.
