Dr Hadjigeorgiou isa Professor of Neurology and Associate Dean of the Medical School of the University of Cyprus. Scientific and Clinical Head of the Neurology Clinic of Nicosia General Hospital. He studied at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, from which he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine.
He specialised in Neurology at the Hellenic Red Cross Hospital in Athens.
He received training in Neurogenetics and Muscle Diseases from the University of Milan and Columbia University in New York. He was successively appointed in all ranks of academic hierarchy and served as Professor of Neurology, Director of the University Neurology Clinic and Chairman of the Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences of the University of Thessaly. He was the Director of the Neuroscience Unit and the Research and Diagnostic Neurogenetics Laboratory of the University of Thessaly. He is a founding member of the Hellenic Academy of Neuroimmunology and the Study Group on the role of the Mediterranean diet in neurodegenerative diseases (The Hellenic Longitudinal Investigation of Aging and Diet-HELIAD). He is a Leading Researcher on International Neurological Disease Study Groups including the Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson’s Disease consortium (GEO-PD), the International Stroke Thrombolysis Register (SITS-ISTR) and the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetic Consortium (IMSG).
He was Vice-President of the European Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (EURLSSG). Dr Hadjigeorgiou’s independent research activity and international collaborations resulted in over 300 PubMed publications with citations 13000 and h-index 58. He participated in publications in important scientific journals including Science, Cell, Nature Commun, Nature Genetics, JAMA, Lancet , Annals of Neurology and Neurology.
