Pediatric Neurology
Dr Ioannis Chr. Ioannou specialises in the treatment of children with neurological problems, especially epilepsy. He is a member of the medical team of the Pediatric Neurology Clinic Arch. Makarios III Hospital, Nicosia. He holds a Scientific Specialist position at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus and has the title of Honorary Assistant Professor at St. George’s Medical University Nicosia. He examines, on a daily basis, children with neurological disorders within the outpatient child neurology clinic and in addition, as a member of the Pediatric Department is in charge of managing inpatients with neurological problems. His long medical training was carried out in hospitals in Greece, Cyprus and the United States (Michigan). He received the specialty title in Pediatric Neurology after four years of training in the specialty of Pediatrics and three additional years specialising in child neurology based on the European standards. He received his medical degree from the University of Athens with a degree 8+ / 10. After a year of training at Larnaca General Hospital, he took part in the national examination for entry in the specialty programme and received the first place. He chose the Specialty of Pediatrics because of his great love for children and completed four-year training at the Arch. Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia. During the pediatrics specialty training was focused on Pediatric Neurology. After receiving the title of Pediatrics specialist, he worked under the direction of Professor Panagiotis Yiallourou as a Research Fellow at the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health in collaboration with the School of Public Health at Harvard University. Then he worked in Pediatric Neurology Clinic at Arch. Makarios III Hospital under the direction of Dr. † Goulas Stylianidou for two years as a pediatrician with a special interest in child neurology. Then he received a scholarship from the Republic of Cyprus for a three-year training and specialisation in child neurology. During his training in Neurology, he initially worked under the supervision of Dr. Antigone Papavasileiou in child neurology department of Penteli Children’s Hospital, then at the Neurological Department of the General State Hospital “G. Genimatas’ Athens for training in Adult Neurology. He continued his education in the pediatric neurology department of Children’s Hospital of Michigan with an emphasis on Epilepsy and Neurophysiology under the supervision of Professor Harry Chugani. After the completion of specialisation training he returned to Cyprus taking on cases as a pediatric neurologist in the Department of Pediatric Neurology of the Archbishop Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia and in 2014 was named Honorary Assistant Professor at St George’s University in Nicosia. Since 2017 he holds the position of Scientific Specialist -Pediatric Neurologist at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus.
