Dr. Maria Koliou is a Pediatrician – Infectious Diseases Specialist, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus and at Archbishop Makarios III. She studied Medicine at the Medical School of the University of Athens and she completed her Pediatrics specialty training at A’ University Clinic at “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital.

She then completed her PhD thesis at the same University on the Immunology of Neonatal Infectious Diseases. Since October 1991 she worked for the State Health Services and specifically in the hospitals of Paralimni and Limassol and from 1996 until August 2019 in Archbishop Makarios III in Nicosia. From 1999-2002 she specialised in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Great Ormond Street, Royal London and St Bartholomew’s hospitals in London. During her Clinical training she also completed a Master’s in Clinical Microbiology at the University of London. After her return to Cyprus, she founded the Clinic of Infectious Diseases and Immunology, which operates at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital and is in charge of hospitalised patients at the Pediatric Clinic of the Hospital.

In 2007 she also founded and manages the Infections and Immunology Research Laboratory. From 2011 until 2019 she was seconded for two days a week to the Infectious Diseases Monitoring and Control Unit at the Ministry of Health. There she dealt with issues in Public Health and Infectious Diseases, such as the monitoring of vaccine-preventable diseases as well as respiratory diseases such as influenza and the respiratory syncytial virus. During this time she also attended the Master in Public Health (MPH) at the European University.

In the field of vaccines, she has been the EPI manager of the vaccination programmes of the Republic of Cyprus for 9 years, as well as the National Point of Contact for vaccinations at the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) (2011-2019). Since August 2019 she has been elected Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus while remaining in her clinical duties at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital. Her research interests focus on epidemiology, pathogens of infections, vaccine-preventable infections, Streptococcal pneumonia infections and other microorganisms that cause respiratory infections and aggressive infections especially in children. She has also dealt with diseases transmitted by carriers and are endemic to the Mediterranean countries such as rickettsiae, leishmaniasis, etc. She has more than 60 publications in international scientific journals and at least 30 presentations as a Guest Speaker at local and international conferences.

To date, she has implemented more than 10 research projects funded by local and international organisations. She has collaborated and supervised more than 15 young scientists, doctors, biologists and medical students.
