Profile

The Radiology department at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital is the Cyprus radiodiagnostic imaging centre of reference for Mother and Child.

The Radiology Department provides diagnostic imaging services for neonates, infants, children and adolescents. The staff of the department consists of experienced professionals, who perform more than 20,000 examinations annually using the latest technology and most advanced methods adapted to the care of children.

For the various imaging techniques that use ionising radiation, the equipment and techniques of the department are adjusted to deliver the lowest possible radiation dose, without affecting the diagnostic accuracy of the test (ALARA: As Low As Reasonably Achievable standards).

Services: – Both outpatients and inpatients are referred to the Radiology Department (Paediatric wards 1 and 2, Paediatric Surgery ward, Paediatric Oncology ward, Paediatric Psychiatric ward, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Child Intensive Care Unit) for radiographic examinations and ultrasounds – Imaging diagnostic examinations are also provided for the Gynaecological-Obstetrics wards and their outpatients (X-rays, ultrasounds and hysterosalpingography). Services are also provided at the Thalassemia centre and the Endocrinology Clinic.

Paediatric Radiology is a subspecialty of Radiology that focuses on imaging of neonates, infants, children, and adolescents. While some pathological conditions in Paediatrics may resemble those in adults, their manifestations are often unique to infants and children. This specialty assesses the dynamics of the body development from preterm neonatal age to late adolescence.

The accurate diagnosis in children requires high-quality imaging with the least possible radiation exposure, conducted in a child-friendly environment.

The following examinations are performed in the Radiology Department:

Ultrasounds:

Brain, Neck, Soft tissues, Eyes, Chest, Upper and lower abdomen, Hip joints

Radiography:

Upper gastrointestinal tract, Lower gastrointestinal tract, swallowing study, Voiding cystourethrography, Hysterosalpingography (Examination for female infertility), Intravenous urography Conventional Radiology: Capabilities to conduct any full-body X-ray scans.
