The Internal Medicine Clinic of the Nicosia General Hospital is located on the 3rd floor of the hospital and has a capacity of 60 beds, including 8 single rooms (for patients with infectious and communicable diseases or immunocompromised patients requiring isolation), 5 double rooms, 1 double room for prisoners from the Central Prisons, and 10 four-bedded rooms.

The Internal Medicine Clinic operates 24/7, including public holidays, and is staffed with experienced and highly trained personnel to handle seriously ill patients. The personnel consist of:

9 Internists (Internal Medicine Specialists): 4 with a special interest in cardiometabolic diseases (diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidaemia), 1 with a special interest in Hepatology, and 2 specialised in Infectious Diseases.

14 Internal Medicine resident doctors, and occasionally trainees in General Medicine/Cardiology/Pulmonology/Neurology/Haematology/Oncology, who undergo 6-12 months of training in their respective specialties.

The Internal Medicine Clinic at Nicosia General Hospital provides inpatient care for a wide range of acute and chronic pathological cases from various medical specialties (gastroenterology, neurology, infectious diseases, dermatology) for diagnostic investigation, therapeutic treatment, or further referral to another specialty upon completion of the diagnostic evaluation. The Clinic serves as a pancyprian referral centre for severe cases, as it receives referrals for the diagnostic investigation and management of complex and diverse cases that require interdisciplinary treatment.

Furthermore, the Internal Medicine Clinic treats rheumatological, dermatological, and neurological cases that are admitted and monitored by their respective specialties (Rheumatology, Dermatology, Neurology). Additionally, the clinic provides consultation services to other clinics and the A&E department of Nicosia General Hospital.

The Internal Medicine Clinic operates an outpatient clinic daily (excluding public holidays) and provides a wide range of medical services, including:

Diabetology Clinic: services related to the diagnosis and therapeutic management of type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, diabetic foot, and insulin pumps. The clinic is staffed with a Specialized Diabetes Nurse who provides training to patients for insulin administration, administration of modern injectable antidiabetic therapies (GLP1 analogs), administration of glucagon. Importantly, the patients are trained to recognise in a timely manner any hypoglycaemia symptoms.

Hypertension-Lipids Clinic: investigation and management of secondary hypertension, resistant hypertension, and gestational hypertension. The clinic offers a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring service (Holter blood Pressure test) for diagnosing white coat hypertension or masked hypertension and assessing adequate regulation of blood pressure in patients. Additionally, diagnostic investigation and management are carried out for patients with dyslipidaemia or familial hypercholesterolemia based on the latest guidelines.

Hepatology Clinic: investigation and management of the entire spectrum of hepatological patients (viral hepatitis, drug-induced hepatitis, metabolic liver diseases, monitoring of liver transplant patients).

Infectious Diseases Clinic: investigation and management of patients with chronic infections (osteomyelitis, spondylodiscitis, chronic Q fever) or other specific infections (e.g., brucellosis, tuberculosis). Additionally, the clinic monitors patients with COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 conditions.

Pathology Clinic: diagnostic investigation and management of patients with pathological signs and symptoms, as well as follow-up care for hospitalised patients. Furthermore, the Internal Medicine Clinic provides training for resident doctors (Internal Medicine, General Medicine, Neurology, Cardiology, Oncology, Haematology, Pulmonology) and medical students from the Medical School of the University of Cyprus. Additionally, the clinic conducts research within its outpatient services and participates in publications in medical scientific journals and medical conferences, both nationally and internationally.
