The Rheumatology Department of Nicosia General Hospital is the only organised Rheumatology Centre in Cyprus and therefore a reference centre in the field. Recently, all the doctors of the department were relocated to new clinics. The operation of the Day Care Unit for Inflammatory Diseases commenced in November 2019 under the administrative and scientific oversight of the Rheumatology Department.
The Rheumatology Department operates daily outpatient clinics and provides patients with a wide range of services such as:
• Monitoring and treatment of patients with autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic scleroderma, dermatomyositis, Sjögren’s Syndrome), autoinflammatory diseases (familial Mediterranean fever), degenerative musculoskeletal diseases (osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, etc.).
• Provision of consultation services in the clinics and the emergency department of Nicosia General Hospital.
• In the Inflammatory Diseases Day Care Unit, specialised therapies (biological agents, immunomodulators, immunoglobulins, vasodilators, etc.) are administered to patients with rheumatism, gastrointestinal and skin diseases.
• Training of specialised doctors of the pathology clinic, nurses and medical students of the University of Cyprus, but also of the medical students of the European University and St George’s University of London (University of Nicosia).
• Collaboration with the University Pathology Clinic and the Rheumatology Department of the Attica Hospital in Athens.
• Participation in research programmes with the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Medical School of the University of Cyprus and Cyprus University of Technology.
